Top 10 most annoying business expressions

The business world is addicted to buzzwords. They are everywhere around us – we can’t avoid them, no way to escape. Senior management is certainly the most to blame. Here is a compilation of my top ten most annoying business expressions:

1. Think outside the box. Easily at the top of my list. This is so “in the box” thinking.

2. At the end of the day. At the end of the day… it’s time to go to home.

3. Customer-Centric. Is that not what a business is all about?

4. Strategic planning. Planning alone must not sound impressive enough.

5. Pendulum has swung too far. This must be one of the fundamental laws of business.

6. Exceed customer expectations. The customer is definetely making a come back.

7. Foreseeable future. And, how far would that be?

8. Move things forward. What is it exactly that you have in mind?

9. Bleeding-edge. “Cutting-edge” does not cut it anymore.

10. Bandwidth. As “I don’t have the bandwidth to work on this”. My advice: better to leave “bandwidth” to network operators.

  1. At the end of the day – I can’t take it how many sales people say that. That’s #1 for me.

    Here’s a few other ideas:

    1) The Question is… – What is the question? The REAL question is why do you use that verbal crutch?

    2) Customized for you OOTB – Out of the Box – other than a cell phone, what software products are truly ever OOTB? Are cell phones truly OOTB nowadays? Not my latest Blackberry.

    3) Build vs. Buy – If you “buy” a product, like CRM or ERP, then why does it take so much consulting to implement, sounds like Build vs. Buy+Build – That latter one annoys me too.

    4) Net/Net – Which net? Tennis? Fishing? Badminton? Volleyball? Net New annoys me too.

    5) SOA – Service Oriented Architecture – I have blood on my hands for preaching that to too many people. I will be judged one day as a result.

    6) The Pink Elephant in the room & the 800 lb. Gorilla – I’ve seen elephants and gorillas and heard about the bull in the china shop, but what annoying person came up those ones?

    7) Solution and “Solution-Selling” – barf, the terms are like nails on a chalkboard.

    8) Repeatable – Isn’t the definition of crazy to do something twice and think you will get different results? If something is truly repeatable, then shouldn’t a computer just do all the work? Why do you need consultants then?

    9) Unique – Isn’t everything in the world unique? Even a sheet of paper?

    10) Drop In – Drop in so you can drop out. Hang in there to hang out – annoying.

    11) Rant – everyone says the term too much too :))
